Questions & Answers

What does Acupuncture feel like?

acupuncture essex

Unless you have received Acupuncture before, most people's experience of needles is when being inoculated, having injections or giving blood. Acupuncture needles are much finer, by reason of not being hollow, flexible and cause little or no pain on insertion.

After insertion the needles may be manipulated to achieve "deqi" which is the sensation the patient may feel, either as a tingling, a dull ache or perhaps a referred sensation in some other part of the body.

During treatment, patients often experience feelings of sleepiness, heaviness of limbs or a pleasant sensation of relaxation.

There are few, if any side effects from Acupuncture although patients can experience drowsiness for some hours after treatment.

How long will the treatment sessions last?

The initial session should last for approximately an hour and a half. This time will be split into two phases, firstly, the interview, during which time a diagnosis and treatment plan will be formulated.

The second phase will be the actual treatment.

Any subsequent treatments will take between 45 minutes and up to one hour, with the emphasis being on actual treatment.

Should my Doctor be informed?

If you are already receiving treatment or medication from your Doctor then this should be revealed to the Acupuncturist. Similarly, your Doctor should be informed if you are having Acupuncture treatment.

Under certain circumstances you may be asked if you will give your permission for the Acupuncturist to inform your Doctor of any concerns he may have over you state of health.

Is Acupuncture Safe?

As a member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC), the Acupuncturist has to follow strict guidelines regarding hygiene and sterilisation procedures for any needles and equipment used.

All needles are one-use disposable, and are individually packaged in sterile blister packs.

The procedures used have been approved by the Department of Health and provide protection against the transmission of infectious diseases.

Patients who have received treatment form a BAcC member are still eligible to donate blood through the National Blood Service should they wish to do so and certificates to that effect are available.

Are consultations confidential?

As with any medical consultation, all disclosures to the Acupuncturist will be treated with the utmost confidentiality.
